A Preface for 'Logos and Man'
Why would anyone want to read a scripturally-derived metaphysic?
What is the utility of Writing and Reading a book which is not itself Scripture but has Scripture at its heart. Metaphysics is forever the foolish domain of earthly wisdom which pales in comparison with the Words of the Lord. Truly. There is no ‘yet’ as a qualifier to this, only an ‘and’ adjoiner. Metaphysics is foolish, Scripture cannot be added to, and the fool is edified by rehearsing scripture in his mind. So that is what this book is. A rehearsal of Scripture in the mind of a fool who is a fool of metaphysics. And in sharing scarps of bread with his fellows in foolery he is worshipping the God of his Fathers. So this book is an exercise of those inclined toward metaphysical plot points, an exercise of worship. And scripture in its Truth, Majesty, Sublime, and Clarity provides us with the Springing of an Awesome living and moving tableau of Metaphysical facticity. So in this scarp of bread think of all the things the bread could be, it is a sharing of the Gospel, through and through; only in the language of Fools from one who is not wise in his own eyes. All wisdom belongs to the Lord, and there are better ways of coming to the Lord in Faith; but here is one way. A rehearsal, a mediation, and a metaphysical-theological prayer. May we derive our metaphysics from scripture and no longer draw near to the metaphysicians, who are fools, who derive their metaphysics from their own imaginations or via extension of the imagination of their predecessors; such is fiction, mine is a paraphrase of the Truth—a Truth that exists in the Lord and wholly above my own mind.
Now for the stronger argument. Just as John Calvin in writing the first systematic theology of the Reformation, his Institutes of the Christian Religion, intended readers to not ‘read-away’ from the Bible but rather ‘read-into’ the Bible; I too wish this for my readership. Further as I said there are definite and infinitely rich metaphysical plot points through scripture, which aid in growing deeper into your faith—especially if you have a soft spot in a hard intellect for such plot points, plot points which are sharp. Yes the metaphysical plot points of scripture are sharp and hit with revelation untold. Lastly as NT Wright declares in the opening for his YouTube lectures, he finds that rehearsing scripture by reading it, thinking it through, or reciting it to others, this is an endowed act of Worship. So that I hope you ‘read-into’ scripture with this volume, that if you have a hardened intellect this book finds you to soften such mind towards amazement at the Truth, Majesty, Clarity, and Sublime of Scripture in its Sharp metaphysical plot points. And finally that as I write this and as you may come to read this it will enable me to rehearse scripture in soliciting it to you and that when you answer the door of this sophisticated bible salesman, by receiving my words on this page you rehearse scripture in such a way as well. And then we will be joined you and I in an Act of Worship. Nothing would warm me as much as this thought. For the Glory of God, in the Name of Jesus Christ, blessings to you, Amen.
