In my Bible study there arose a controversy disagreement. Is the New Age of Postmodernism getting worse to the point of being a ‘darkened’ era, as compared with the ‘freedom’ and lightness of the 1970s or 1980s. I like the notion that Pastor Doug Wilson uses when he claims that the seeds of our current rebellion were sewn in 1950s Eisenhower America or earlier yet. I believe this to be true.
There is a useful wisdom applied in the language and typologies of characterization in Howe and Strauss’ book ‘The Fourth Turning’ when they speak of ‘generational’ archetypes. For these researchers the Boomers are the ‘Prophet’ generation, the Gen Xers are a ‘Nomad’ generation and believe it or not Millennials are the ‘Hero’ generation sharing this archetype (the archetypes repeat every 80-100 years) with their Grandparents of the GI generation who bravely fought in WW2.
In my bible study there were 3 boomers, 3 gen xers, and 2 millennials, but I was the only one to speak in defence of the current postmodern era as a time of darkness yes, but also as a time of hope…
